Butte College football team is 5-0 after a 29-7 win Saturday over Delta College in Stockton. A week off for the Roadrunners, then they will open the Nor-Cal conference season at home against City College of San Francisco.
Even though Butte is 5-0, there are still some things that need (if not fixing) fine-tuning. The running game still leaves alot to be desired. Curry Williams looks pretty good, though he's still getting healthy, and Travis Davidson in a reserve role has averaged about 5 yards per carry. Ricky Barr is getting the majority of the carries and is running much harder than the early part of the season, but there haven't been alot of holes for him. 19 yards in 13 carries Saturday, including 5 carries that went for no gain or a short loss. I think much of this is attributable to the fact that there are still alot of assignment breakdowns up in front. I know the Butte coaching staff is a little frustrated by it. Another thing that showed up against Delta is the fact that the Butte receivers did not do a very good job of breaking off routes and finding an open spot when Quarterback Jordan Rodgers was in trouble and under pressure. Rodgers found himself scrambling alot Saturday. Luckily he's good at it. He led Butte with 60 yards, despite being sacked 3 times.
Good news, Ricky Barr is a reliable receiver out of the backfield and when he gets some room outside, he's a "big-yardage" threat. He's not the only one. Rashad Ross is dynamic with the football. He had a spectacular 58 yard punt return for a score. He and Barr have combined for 15 touchdowns this season. On defense, I like the two corners for Butte. Ja'Maury Cal and Aaron Kincy have been locking people up the last three weeks. Of course, they'll need to be at least as good as they have been when SF, Santa Rosa, & Foothill start challenging them. The pass rush is coming along the the Butte linebackers have looked very solid Chris Ewald is a good kicker. Drove some more kicks into the end zone and has been reliable on X-P and Field Goals.
Through 5 games, it's obvious Butte has a great quarterback in Jordan Rodgers. He's showing more patience in allowing plays to develop, but when it's time to make a play with his legs, he's doing it. I think his long-ball touch is better this year as well.
Things to hope for in the bye week: Butte gets their run blocking assignments down so they can establish a running game that they can count on to move the chains and the clock. Anthony Spain gets healthy. The wide receiver is a guy who can go up and get a ball in a crowd. |

Take Me Out to the Ballgame. |

You ready for Saturday? We've got the Rush Bus loaded with a fun group and we're headed to the Giants game. If you've got your tickets, don't forget 'em. We'll be meeting the bus Saturday morning at about 7:40 at Rush Personnel. Don't be late! We'll have our list of winners, so we don't miss anybody. Barry Zito is gonna be pitching for the Giants and I've heard it's supposed a nice day, so it should be fun. I'm thinking about bringing my glove in case a foul ball comes my way. On the other hand, how much worse will it look if I miss the ball wearing a mitt as opposed to missing a ball with my bare hand. Who am I kidding, I'll be hiding behind whoever's close by, trying to save my overpriced beer. |

So the nice weather lately had me remembering the good old days of summer when you'd go swimming all day, then play Little League baseball at night. I loved it, Dad gets roped into umpiring a game, then somebody's mom starts ripping him for not being able to see and coach tells us to quit swimming on game-day, cause we'll be all worn out for the game that night while I'm in the batters box with my over-sized, sweaty helmet hoping I don't strike out. It was a great way to spend the summer. Imagine my surprise when I found out that we don't play Little League Baseball in the summer around here. What? When did that happen? Little League seasons are almost over already! Huh? What do kids do in the summer if they don't play baseball? We finally don't have to worry about rain-outs around here and the season is over. I was flabbergast when I heard that. I had no idea. That sure takes the fun out of the annual family arguement about if we're gonna sacrifice a couple of weeks of Little League season so junior can join the family for the annual trek to South Dakota to see Uncle Larry's new sheep and the World's Largest Ball of string. |
